Class 6A Jasper moved to No. 1 in this week’s AL.com’s high school volleyball rankings to mark the only change among top-ranked teams.
It’s the first No. 1 volleyball ranking in school history for the Vikings. Jasper (formerly Walker) reached as high as No. 2 in the 2014 September 4 rankings of Class 6A teams behind John Carroll and stayed there the following week, but has never been higher.
Jasper (31-2) ran off 30 straight wins to start the season before falling twice in the past week, losing to Daphne and Brewer, but the Vikings impressed with wins over Class 7A power and previously second-ranked Oak Mountain along with No. 10 Vestavia Hills and Enterprise.
It's a narrow margin between the top four in the class with defending champion Hazel Green, Spanish Fort, Daphne and Jasper all contenders for the title.
The remainder of No. 1 teams stayed the same with Class 7A McGill-Toolen, Class 5A Lawrence County, Class 4A St. James, Class 3A Bayside Academy, Class 2A St. Luke’s, Class 1A Addison and AISA Macon East staying atop the rankings.
Class 7A top-ranked McGill-Toolen (28-6) lost three matches at a prestigious tournament in Georgia, falling to defending Georgia champion Harrison and defending South Carolina champion Dorman, which is ranked in the top 25 nationally, and Bufford, Ga. The Dirty Dozen has not lost to a state team this season.
