Our Teacher of the Month for October is Mrs. Beth Baker. Mrs. Baker teaches 5th Grade here at Maddox Intermediate. She works hard, encourages others, dedicated to her students, and strives for Maddox to be the best. Mrs. Baker has lead our 5th Grade students at Camp McDowell the last few years, and it is always a successful trip. We are very blessed and thankful for you Mrs. Baker! Your hard work does not go unnoticed!
MIS:?Where did you go grow up, and where did you go to high school??
?I grew up and went to high school in Alex City-Benjamin Russell High School! Go Wildcats!!!
MIS:?Where did you go to college, and what did you get your degree in??
I went to multiple colleges! Central Alabama, Auburn, Auburn at Montgomery, Jefferson State and after 14 years, graduated from University of Alabama at Birmingham! I changed my major a bazillion times because I would always become DEEPLY interested in almost EVERY class I took! I literally majored in everything but business! I especially loved the Sciences! My first degree was in Early Childhood Education and I have my Masters from UAB in Elementary Education. I worked at UAB in the School of Education for a while and began working on my PhD until I got a job at McDowell Environmental Center!
MIS:?Tell us a little about your teaching experience.
?My great grandmother, my grandmother and my mother all were teachers! I began teaching my dolls when I was 3 years old! After graduating from UAB, I began teaching 5th grade in in Trussville, Alabama! I taught there for 7 years-I taught all girls the last year I was there! I then went to UAB School of Education as a Director of Development and External Affairs which is a fancy name for a fundraiser! While working at UAB, I taught several courses-my favorite was Children’s Literature! I actually taught Mrs. St. Clair!
MIS:?What are your hobbies??
I love to read, hike, cook, travel, go to theater, worship, and be in nature!
MIS:?Tell me something about yourself that someone might not know.
?I used to sing gospel music and I have a CD-I do not even own a copy!
MIS:?What is your favorite part about teaching??
The “Aha!” moments and I love hearing students tell stories about being in my class! I love it when I can “hook” a student on a new book series or teach them a new game of strategy! I have taken thousands of students to McDowell Environmental Center and that is always life changing!
